Love this! Will try tomorrow AM.

I have a slightly compressed disc in the lowest disc (can never remember what it’s called) and the best I’ve ever felt was after a 4 day backpacking trip at the end of 2019, something like 50miles carrying 40-50 lbs. Walking is magic for our bodies!

Awesome, let me know how it goes! A consideration for you given that history might be to wear a 20lb backpack. Although it is a little counterintuitive, this load actually reduces the amount of spine compression with walking (h/t to the great Stu McGill for this insight). Might be one of the reasons why the backpacking trip was so therapeutic...

So, when I do the treadmill, I start at 2.9 with a 2% incline and go up. I usually walk for 15 minutes. How many days a week should I do this, if I increase the time?

I've noticed that working at night, I'm gaining weight and feeling lethargic. I really want to change this. Can you give me advice?

As long as you're not having any orthopedic issues (e.g. joint or foot pain) then you can do it daily. The practical limitation is probably more "how much time you have" vs "optimal for fat loss and conditioning." Hard to generalize without knowing your resting HR, but keeping HR under 140 will ensure that you don't overdo it if you're doing 45min/day. If you can only do every other day higher intensity might make sense, but integrating it into your daily routine will probably be easier in the long run. All that to say I would try to do 45min daily at 3mph, adjust the incline as needed to keep HR under 140. You should notice you're able to handle more incline relatively quickly (definitely after 1 week). As you progress incline it means you're able to burn more calories in the same amount of time. With conditioning improves activities of daily living get easier as the relative exertion of these activities decreases.

A funny treadmill story…Grant’s mother and I have been going to a fitness center for years and have access to a lot of equipment including treadmills. When Grant came to visit us over the holidays in 2019, he told us we needed to have a treadmill in our house. We didn’t think so, but he set one up for us and then he and his wife made use of it every day of their visit. After they left it gathered dust for awhile. Then COVID hit and our fitness centers closed! Well, this treadmill has become a major part of our workouts and fitness, and now that the clubs have reopened, we continue to use the treadmill at home (convenient!) and at the club.

Thank you, my son, for the insightful and wonderful gift!

Love, Dad

I'd like to add that the use of a Nintendo switch with handheld controllers in combination with this training modality can help improve one's fitness as well as their mariokart skills, as it has done for me! This really changed my life for the better both physically and mentally, thank you!
