What is H2F Man?

A digital environment that allows me (Dr. Grant Smith) to organize my thoughts and conversations towards fulfilling my (current) central professional purpose: Enhancing the lives of Soldiers by applying innovative strategies to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Who is Grant Smith?

I’m an Army Physical Therapist currently working as the Holistic Health and Fitness Director (and Division Physical Therapist) for the 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kansas. I have a 20 year background in sport, have been participating in Army activities for the last 15 years, and consider myself an expert on holistic human performance optimization. I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values. I have many heterodox beliefs. Whatever range of cosmic factors conspired to produce such an unthinkable person I can’t be sure. I feel like it’s some combination of my perspective traversing the globe 79” off the ground and an accident of birth, but I digress. In addition to the above, I am here because I took an oath. For those of you that are unfamiliar I’ll transcribe the latest oath that I took:

I, Major Grant E. Smith, do solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

I believe in my heart that my actions/communications here on this platform represent my best effort to uphold this oath. I understand that there are many cynics within the Army that will scoff at such. If this sentiment is truly so pervasive, then the Army is not the organisation that it claims to be. Even if this is the case, it doesn’t mean the Army can’t become that organisation. If you’re skeptical I simply ask that you come join me for some discussion to give me a chance to overcome your cynicism in an effort to help you reach your full potential. If you do, I ask only one thing: Fulfill what I believe to be your ethical obligation to correct me if you see anything demonstrably inaccurate in the comment section of the relevant article. If you do that it allows me make the necessary correction so that I may quench my insatiable lust for accuracy.

Why substack? Why not some proprietary DoD funded/”official” platform?

All the opinions herein are my own. All opinions of any military personnel in the comments are their own as well. In order for me to be able to host candid, productive conversations I can’t afford to constantly provide caveats that these opinions don’t reflect those of 1ID, Army or DoD. It is a lot more obvious that this is the case here, and that anyone participating in discussion is similarly not speaking for the organization as a whole or using rank or position to advance any particular political agenda. Additionally, I believe substack is on the bleeding edge of innovation in the marketplace of ideas. In order to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, failing to harness this resource is folly.

The censorship on other platforms comprises an omnipresent pressure to self-censor, thereby interfering with open, honest, and effective communication. My guiding light in moderating conversation here is a simple litmus test:

Is the discussion representative of a good faith effort to engage in a productive conversation?

If the answer to that question is yes, then I feel that it is inappropriate to censor and I trust substack not to interfere. I think the real beauty of this platform is that if you don’t believe this level of censorship is appropriate, you can start your own substack. If you think it is not being censored enough here at H2F Man, I am happy to discuss, but believe strongly that such censorship will ensure that we are unable to achieve optimal solutions for this problem set.

If you are easily offended, I ask that you leverage MRT skills to overcome this in order to productively participate in the conversation. Everyone is welcome here, but to paraphrase what I expressed above, bad faith efforts to control the conversation with ad hominem will not be tolerated (looking at you CRT!).
